A photograph of students with buckets of water.
Map of Lake Victoria.
Our school was 200 yards from Lake Victoria. Everyone got their water from the lake in buckets. They carried the buckets home on their heads. I always wondered about the water in our lake. There are many gold mines near Lake Victoria. Gold mining can release lots of toxic metals, especially mercury, into the environment. I always wanted to be able to measure the lake water that we drank to see how if it was safe.
