Towards the end of the 19th century, many Floridians enjoyed attending balls. Orchestras played music for people to dance to at these events. Although the waltz has long been a much-loved ballroom dance, it was considered inappropriate for modest ladies. This was especially true of the New England area during the 1800s. Despite this fact, dancing masters in Florida still taught the waltz. It was said that great dancers would "glide" across the floor, hence the title, "Florida Glide Waltzes."
