Union County is Florida's 61st county, established on May 20, 1921, from a segment of Bradford County. It was originally supposed to be named New River County, to restore a name that had been lost in 1861 when New River was renamed Bradford. The common explanation for the change to Union was that the two parties involved in the split necessary to create a new county were united in their desire to separate. Lake Butler is the county seat. Lake Butler was named after Col. Robert Butler, who received the surrender of East Florida from the Spaniards on July 10, 1821.
