The Seminole Wars

Objectives:

  1. The students will be able to explain the Seminole Wars, their events, and treaties.
  2. The students will be able to explain the steps Florida took in order to become a state.

Sunshine State Standards Benchmarks:

SS.A.1.2.1 - SS.A.2.2.4 - SS.A.4.2.1 - SS.A.6.2.3

Vocabulary:

allies confrontations negotiated nullified
empowered reservation relocated persuaded

Suggested Activities:

  1. Have the students construct a timeline of the major events in the article.
  2. Discuss the vocabulary using the C(2)QU method.
  3. Have the students create a "classroom constitution" listing the laws (rules) that they are to follow. Have each student sign the completed document.
  4. Using a map of Florida, label the areas discussed in the article. For example, Escambia County, St. Johns County, St. Augustine, Pensacola, places where battles took place, etc.
  5. Have the students research about life on an Indian reservation.
  6. Complete and review FCAT questions.

(Note: Actual FCAT practice passages are wrtten at the students' independent reading level. These Florida History selections are written at the students' instructional reading level. Therefore, students should not be asked to complete the questions until after receiving class instruction on the vocabulary and content of the passage. Students should also read the Florida History selection independently before answering the FCAT questions and be permited to return to the selection for rereading as they answer.)
