Spanish-American War for Cuba's Independence
Objectives:
- The students will be able to explain why the United States joined in the fight for Cuba's independence.
- The students will identify the key players in the Cuban revolution.
- The students will explain how Florida played an important military role in the war.

Suggested Activities:
- Have the students locate Cuba on a map. Determine how many miles it is from Key West using the mileage key.
- Have the students search for additional information about Cuba, such as its geographical make-up, culture, businesses, etc.
- Using a map of Florida and Cuba, have the students label the cities used as military bases during the Spanish-American War. On a globe locate the Philippine Islands, Manila, Puerto Rico, and Guam.
- Complete and review FCAT questions.
(Note: Actual FCAT practice passages are wrtten at the students' independent reading level. These Florida History selections are written at the students' instructional reading level. Therefore, students should not be asked to complete the questions until after receiving class instruction on the vocabulary and content of the passage. Students should also read the Florida History selection independently before answering the FCAT questions and be permited to return to the selection for rereading as they answer.)
