Tallahassee, Florida
M'Culloch's Universal Gazateer1848
Tallahassee, city, capital of Leon county and of the territory of Florida, 20 m. N. St. Marks, 202 m. W.S.W. St. Augustine, 806 W. The situation is elevated, and a fine mill-stream, issuing from several springs, flows on its E. border, with a fall of 15 or 16 feet, but soon sinks into a cleft of limestone rock, a frequent occurrence in this country. It is regularly laid out, containing a number of public squares, and has a statehouse, a courthouse, jail, market house, an academy, three churches, an Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian, a bank, 30 stores, three printing offices, three weekly newspapers, 400 dwellers, and 1616 inhabitants, which in the winter season at times amount to 2500. A railroad to St. Marks, which may be regarded as its port, greatly facilitates business.
