State Capitol

The State Capitol- Tallahassee, Florida. Tallahassee, capital city of Florida, was the only Southern capital that did not fall into the hands of the Union Army during the Civil War. Here is preserved unsullied, Southern "atmosphere" that goes back to the ante-bellum days. The early settlers who came to Florida 400 years ago sought health and wealth just as did those who have been going to Florida in recent years. Jean Ribaut, first press agent for Florida climate, wrote in 1562, "This is the fairest, fruitfullest, pleasantest land of all the world." Florida is unique. The climate, soil, geography, topography, birds, trees, flowers, beasts, and fishes are outside the experience of the rest of the people of the United States. It is the largest state, next to Georgia, east of the Mississippi. It has 58,666 square miles with 3,805 square miles of lakes and rivers. The eastern edge of Florida is farther west than the western boundary of New York and the western shore of Lake Michigan is farther east than the western border. Chicago lies directly north of Pensacola. An aviator flying directly south of Buffalo would skirt the shore of the Atlantic east of Miami. All of Florida is farther west than the west coast of South America. The highest point in the state is said to be in Bay County, 413 feet above sea level. The lowest point is south and west of Lake Okeechobee. The highlands of Florida, that alluring back country with its innumerable lakes and streams, its gently rolling country and picturesque scenery, is truly the Garden Spot of Florida, perhaps eventually the summer and winter playground of the nation.
