Palm fringed Lake Worth Avenue, Palm Beach, Florida. Palm Beach is a widely famed Winter resort, its shores swept by the warm Gulf Stream. Starting with surroundings lavishly blessed by Nature, the landscape gardener has developed a superb semi-tropical open air conservatory. Before us is one of the palm-fringed walks along the shore of Lake Worth. People of wealth and fashion from all over the world have long been drawn to Palm Beach by its hotels, its golf links, its climate, its broad expanses of sandy shores- by the sheer loveliness of its surroundings. The stately royal palm, the coconut palm, the royal poinciana, the poinsettia, the flaming hibiscus, the vari-colored croton- green lawns, flowers, climbing roses and vines make of Plam Beach a semi-tropical paradise. Here flowers and plant life, like the tropical birds and butterflies, display themselves in the gayest of tints, in gorgeous, riotous masses of color. Lake Worth, a beautiful inland lagoon dotted with launches, yachts and house-boats, borders Palm Beach on the west; on the east are the white sand beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, a part of Florida's 1,100 miles of sea coast. Within the state are nearly 3,000,000 acres of water abounding in fish of 650 varieties- the sportsman's paradise. Florida is an empire of nearly 40 million acres, the heart of it less than 750 miles from the center of population of the United States. Seven million of these acres are in farms. It is estimated that 20 million acres of Florida land is available for cultivation and that a half million farmers could live well on these acres and produce one billion dollars worth of crops with a minimum of effort and enjoy an outdoor life the year round. |
