A
limited cart of Southern Florida. Unlimited wealth has made of the surroundings
of the chief resorts of Florida a vast semitropical paradise. The grounds
near the fashionable hotels everywhere are filled with tropical plants
and trees, as cocoanut trees, palms of many varieties, bananas, guaves,
grapefruit, avacado, pears, custard apples, maumee apples, mangoes,
and pawpaws and countless foliage and flowering plants and shrubs. There
are winter resorts in Florida that in splendor rival the famous resorts
of the Mediterranean. But in the immediate vicinity of the palaces and
parks of the rich many be found the shiftless, squalid negro with his
primitive implements and his lack of ambition or indolence. There are
twice as many farms operated by white as by colored farmers, and the
average size tended by the latter is only 53 acres against 133.6 acres
for those operated by white farmers. |
