Configuring Various Web Servers to Serve HyperStudio Stacks

Unix Web Server

Serving from a user’s account

Use an editor such as pico or vi to edit the .htaccess file. If no such file exists, you will need to create it.
Add the following line to the file: AddType application/hstu stk
Save the file.
Type the following line: chmod 644 .htaccess

Serving from any account on the server:

Create an entry in the file that registers MIME types. As administrator, you will need the following information:
MIME Type: application
Sub Type: hstu
Extensions: stk

NOTE: Also keep in mind that you must change the UNIX file permissions for
any stacks and/or HTML files you upload. This can be done by typing: chmod
644 filename where filename is the name of the file you wish to modify.

Macintosh Web Server

If you are using Mac Web:

Modify the MacHTTP.config file by adding the following line to the file:
BINARY .STK TEXT * application/hstu II

If you are using WebSTAR:

Run the application called WebSTAR Admin.
Locate and select your server in the Pick a Server window.
Choose Suffix Mapping from the Configure menu. The Suffix Mapping dialog appears.
Choose the following settings:

Action: BINARY

File Suffix: .STK

File Type: TEXT Creator: *

MIME Type: application/hstu

Windows NT

If you are running HTTP Web Server

Open HTTP applet in the Control Panel Window
Click on New Mapping
Set the file extension to: STK
Set the MIME type to: application/hstu

If you are running Internet Information Server (IIS)

Open the Registry editor (run regedit)
Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\InetInfo\
Parameters\MimeMap key.
Choose New from the Edit menu and choose String Value. A new value appears in the right side of the Registry Editor.
Rename the new value as application/hstu,stk,,5. (This name must be types exactly as shown here, with no spaces and no trailing period.)
Close the Registry Editor and restart IIS.

NOTE: Random changes to the Registry can produce instability in your system.
Do not make changes without thorough research.

Windows 95 Personal Web Server

(Same as Windows NT running (IIS))

Open the Registry editor (run regedit)
Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\InetInfo\
Parameters\MimeMap key.
Choose New from the Edit menu and choose String Value. A new value appears in the right side of the Registry Editor.
Rename the new value as application/hstu,stk,,5. (This name must be types exactly as shown here, with no spaces and no trailing period.)
Close the Registry Editor and restart Personal Web Server.

NOTE: Random changes to the Registry can produce instability in your system.
Do not make changes without thorough research.

Using FTP to Serve your Stacks

FTP servers are also capable of delivering "realtime" HyperStudio stacks. Typically, no setup is necessary for FTP servers since all that is needed for successful transmission is a "raw data" transfer.
