Virtual Reality Movies: Birkenau

Each panorama movie is available in two file sizes. The small movies display at the same size on your computer screen as the large movies, but the small movies do not allow you to zoom in on as much detail as the large movies do. All movies are a full circle (360 degrees) unless noted otherwise.


Birkenau Center of Women's Camp

This VR opens facing the unloading ramp toward the center of the camp. The area to the right was the women's camp. The area to the left at first housed men, but from 1943 was also a part of the women's camp.


Birkenau Children's Barrack

This VR shows the front of the children's barrack within the women's camp. Two murals were painted on the interior walls of this barrack.

Birkenau International Monument to the Victims of Facism

This movie opens looking down the unloading ramp toward the "Death Gate" far in the distance. Also visible are the ruins of Crematorium II, the International Monument to the Victims of Fascism, and the ruins of Crematorium III.


Birkenau Overview atop the "Death Gate"

Birkenau was a sub-camp of Auschwitz located just two miles away. This 180-degree movie shows an overview of the camp from a guard tower atop the "Death Gate" through which the trains entered the camp.


Birkenau Quarantine Section Barracks

This view of the interior of a wooden quarantine barrack shows the living space available for as many as 1,000 prisoners in a building originally designed for 52 horses.


Birkenau Route to Gas Chambers

This road was traveled by many prisoners on their way to the gas chambers. The VR opens facing the unloading ramp.


Birkenau Theresienstadt Family Camp

The barracks which once stood on either side of this road comprised the Theresienstadt family camp. This is a 180 degree movie.


Birkenau Unloading Ramp

This view is from the center of the unloading ramp. Visible are: the "Death Gate," the brick buildings of the women's camp, the International Monument to the Victims of Fascism, and a large area where only chimneys mark the location of burned barracks.
