Overview of Distance Learning Technologies

The various technologies used in distance learning can be roughly divided into four categories: print, audio (voice), computer (data), and video (see Figure 8). Each of these categories has several subdivisions. Be aware, however, that many of the technologies overlap into more than one category. For example, though, audioconferences and videoconferences can take place using a computer and the Internet. The basic technologies are illustrated in the table below. The following chapters of this booklet provide advantages, disadvantages and guidelines for each technology.
