Quicksteps and marches were popular in mid-nineteenth century Florida. Many of these songs were dedicated to men in the military. People would dance to them or perform them on the piano. Most wealthy and educated Floridians owned and studied the piano or violin. They often played these instruments in "parlor" performances. They also attended balls, carnivals, and concerts. Many of them had French, Spanish, or English ancestry and composers wrote music for these people. Therefore the music usually had a European influence.
